Under the 30 percent line experts advise staying below.

Not a score. Each issuer reports your balance on its own schedule, so the share a lender sees can differ from today's.

Utilization is the share of your credit limits your balances take up. The calculator above works it out per card and overall: all your balances over all your limits.

A worked example

CardBalanceLimitShare used
Card 1$1,200$3,00040%
Card 2$450$1,50030%
Card 3$0$2,5000%
All cards$1,650$7,00024%

Card 1 alone is at 40%, but overall the three cards use 24% of $7,000, under the 30 percent line.

The 30 percent line

The CFPB's page on keeping a good score says experts advise keeping your use of credit at no more than 30 percent of your total limit, and that paying the full balance each month tends to do best. The calculator shows how far a total is from that line: here it is already under, so there is nothing to pay down for it ($0).

What it does not tell you

It does not compute a score. Scoring models are private, they differ, and each issuer reports a balance on its own schedule, so the share a model sees can differ from what you see today.

Closing a card lowers your total limit, which is why hole 4 costs a stroke for closing an unused card. To put this calculator on your own site, see the widgets.

How this page was made

Drafted on October 25, 2026 with a language model from the sources listed, every source opened that day, and sampled by the editor after publication. Every figure is computed by the same code the calculators run. General information, not financial or legal advice: nothing here computes a credit score or answers one reader's situation.
