balance interest
Paying $150 instead saves $757.66 in interest.
Assumes no new charges or fees and monthly interest. A real card may count interest daily, so treat this as close, not exact.
The calculator above pays a balance down with the same payment every month and no new charges. Each month the interest (the APR divided by twelve) is added, then the payment comes off.
A worked example
A $3,000 balance at 24 percent APR:
| Monthly payment | Paid off in | Interest | Total paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| $75 | 6 years and 10 months | $3,095.79 | $6,095.79 |
| $100 | 3 years and 11 months | $1,627.30 | $4,627.30 |
| $150 | 2 years and 2 months | $869.64 | $3,869.64 |
| $300 | 1 year | $381.10 | $3,381.10 |
The first month's interest on that balance is $60. A payment at or under that never pays the card off, which is why the calculator says so instead of printing a date.
How it counts
Interest is worked out monthly and rounded to the cent. A real card may count interest daily, charge fees, or set a minimum payment that falls as the balance does, so treat the answer as close, not exact. The last payment is usually smaller than the rest.
Paying more than the minimum also lowers the share of your limit you use, the subject of the utilization calculator. To put this calculator on your own site, see the widgets.

How this page was made
Drafted on October 25, 2026 with a language model from the sources listed, every source opened that day, and sampled by the editor after publication. Every figure is computed by the same code the calculators run. General information, not financial or legal advice: nothing here computes a credit score or answers one reader's situation.
